How do you work with people who annoy you? How do you deal with them?
Here is a lesson that taught me how to get than the annoyance.
I've listened to Abraham Lincoln when he once said. "The easiest way to defeat an enemy is to make that the enemy your friend."
A few years ago I met Richard. Richard had a personality that didn't mesh with me. In general, I am a n easy person to get along with. I do my best to the best in others. However, with Richard, I tried to flee the scene when he was around. I used to avoid behaviour from annoyance to keep Richard's face.
I plan a large audience all day workshop on stress. Since I was personally financing of this workshop, I was watching very carefully costs. Richard volunteered to help me sell my back of the room. Although I probably seemed annoyed that he asked, I was forced to the cost-effective thing to do and get him to help me sell my products.
At the time I had only one product. It was a cassette tape on overcoming Stress. I had no book or large tape album, only a lone cassette tape selling for twenty bucks.
When the morning of the workshop arrived, I was very disappointed. My public seminar attracted only fifty paid registrants. I decided that I would give that fifty people the best I can, although I knew that I would barely break even at the end of the day.
I gave a great workshop. I even answered questions during lunch and breaks, never leaving the stage for a moment.
Richard was no visible all day because the back of the room area sell was actually a separate room leads to the bathrooms and the parking lot.
Finally, at the end of the day and after all the participants went home, I sat exhausted on the stage. Richard came from the back of the area of the room with a big smile on his face.
He said, "Wayne, you look tired." Do you want to know how many tapes you your fifty participants sold? " Secretly I was hoping that he would not tell me, but I said, "Okay Richard, how much we sell?
Richard said, we all sold. We sold three hundred cassettes only fifty people!
I asked, "How can that happen?" Richard told me, "every time there's a break during the lunch, participants passed by and they would buy various additional tapes for their friends and family members who could not come to the workshop. This buying frenzy lasted all day while I was working hard on the stage.
Mining disaster proved to be one of my best days. Never would have turned out that way unless I my annoyance to avoid behaviour overcame and Richard my friend made.
Today, more than twenty years later, Richard and I still good friends. When I think back, I can't remember what it was about Richard that annoyed me. In fact anyone who has ever annoyed me, I lost that feeling of annoyance. I can not forget all about that workshop many years ago, but remember nothing of what me in the first place, annoyed.
If Abraham Lincoln once said, "" the simplest way to get an enemy to defeat in order to make the enemy your friend. "
Don't forget the Abe's statement the next time someone annoys you. That person you can just in a very pleasant way surprised!
